Those who are worthy of praise
I can think of nine whom I would call blessed, and a tenth my tongue proclaims:
A man who can rejoice in his children;
a man who lives to see the downfall of his foes.
Happy the man who lives with a sensible wife,
and the one who does not plow with ox and ax together.
Happy is the one who does not sin with the tongue,
and the one who has not served an inferior.
Happy is the one who finds a friend,
and the one who speaks to attentive listeners.
How great is the one who finds wisdom!
But none is superior to the one who fears the Lord.
Fear of the Lord surpasses everything;
to whom can we compare the one who has it.
Sirach 25:7-11
Gospel teachings of Jesus
Jesus and the Temple Tax
When they reached Capernaum,
the collectors of the temple tax came to Peter and said,
"Does your teacher not pay the temple tax?"
He said ,"Yes he does.". And when he came home Jesus
spoke of it first, asking, "What do you think Simon?
From whom do kings of the Earth take toll or tribute?
From their children or from others?" When Peter said,
"From others," Jesus said to him, "Then the children are free.
However so that we do not give offense to them, go to the
sea and cast a hook; take the first fish that comes up; and when
you open its mouth, you will find a coin; take that and give it
to them for you and me.
Mathew 17:24-27
